Principals and teachers have found that students do their
best when we expect the best from them. Specific goals and high aspirations encourage our
young people to learn more and at much higher levels.
Honoring student achievement and hard work is the purpose
of the President's Education Awards Program. Since 1983, the program has provided
individual recognition from the President and the U.S. Secretary of Education to those
students whose outstanding efforts have enabled them to meet challenging standards of
excellence. Each year, thousands of elementary, middle, and high schools participate by
recognizing deserving students.
The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of
Education, in partnership with the National Association of Elementary School
Principals
and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The awards include a
certificate signed by the President, the Secretary of Education, ad the school principal.
Students receiving this award must have a grade point
average of 90 on a 100 point scale (an A- on a letter scale or a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale). In
addition to this the students must have obtained an 85th percentile or higher in math or
reading OR be recommended from a teacher plus one other staff member.
The Johnson County Presidential Academic Excellence Awards
ceremony is held to honor students in the sixth grade, eighth grade, and seniors who have
achieved academic excellence.
