Djoser,
son of Khaskhemwy, ruled during the third Dynasty. He ruled for almost twenty years. He
engaged his vizier Imhotep to build him a pyramid to protect his remains. This was later
called the Great Step Pyramid. It is the oldest monumental architecture still in
existence. The Step Pyramid was built at Saqqara, the burial ground near the capital of
Memphis. It included not only the pyramid, but a group of shrines and related buildings as
well. |
