Counselor

Paula Stewart

Hi. My name is Paula Stewart. I'm the school counselor at our school. I work with children in all grade levels. I'm here on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. You can call me any time at 727-8512.

I work with children individually, in small groups, and in the classroom. In grades 1-3, I do the "Talking About Touching" curriculum from the Committee for Children. The program teaches children rules that will help keep them safe in potentially dangerous situations. The program also teaches children to identify safe and unsafe touches, and to ask an adult for help if they need it. If your children are in grades 1-3, you receive a permission slip every year about the program.

For Kindergarten students, we invite Happy Bear to our school to talk about safety. Happy Bear comes to us from the Children's Advocacy Center and is very popular with students.

I work with individual students if they are referred by a parent or teacher, or if they self-refer. Some of the many things children come to talk about are friendship problems, an illness in the family, the death of a loved one, divorce issues, and many other things. I also work with children who have a hard time behaving in school, or have a hard time focusing on school work. I have a box at school where your child can put a private note any time.

I am very fortunate to be the coach of the Girls on the Go program at Mountain City Elementary. We have 15 girls from grades 3-6. This semester we are meeting on Tuesdays after school until 4:30. We are in training to run/walk a 5K in May.

If you would like me to work with your child, call me at 727-8512 or email at pstewart@k12tn.net. Anything you choose to share with me will by law be kept strictly confidential.
