Students participated in a hands-on simulation to
help understand adaptation by examining the diversity of bird beaks.
Students used a variety of household items, such as strainers and
pliers, to simulate different types of bird beaks. They then
attempted to use their “beaks” to feed on an assortment of simulated
bird foods. Students discovered that, just as in nature, each beak
is adapted to gathering and feeding on specific types of food.
