Students in third grade will be introduced to new words and literary genres/texts during story time each week. Each week different activities lend themselves to the incorporation of specific SPI's.  If you have questions concerning anything with the MCE Media Center Curriculum, please contact me through the school office.

  Book location skills in Fiction and Nonfiction Use the SmartBoard to show shelf locations and Destiny to remind students how to locate books using call numbers.

    Read an excerpt from The Littles (Chapter 1-6) by Peterson
  Show books by Betsy Byars and Judy Blume Read a portion of Freckle Juice by Judy Blume. Show website of Judy Blume.
  Introduce the Parts of a Book  3.1.spi.3 Discuss main idea, setting, characters, and plot 3.1.spi.4
  Read a story.  Identify the stated main idea. Identify the setting, characters, and plot (3.1.spi.4). Write a brief summary of the main idea of the story (3.1.spi.11).
  Review Parts of a Book (3.1.spi.3). Locate books on the shelves using Destiny, Smartboard, and list of books

  Black History Month

-- Using an Encyclopedia/Look up an assigned topic/Write down 5 facts.

-- Read My Red Balloon.  Discuss the impact of a parent or loved one being away because of active duty.

-- Read Show Way by Jacqueline Woods.  Show students different types of maps using the atlases. Excellent website by Woodson. http://www.jacquelinewoodson.com

-- Map awareness.  Look at atlases, globes and maps.

Reading Is Fundamental and Read Across America Day/Dr. Seuss's birthday

-- Read Lost by David McPhail. Look at different types of maps online and print.  Using the information about legends, maps and atlases, students will draw a map showing how to get from the school to their house.

--  Maps and globes.  Using the desk map provided, answer questions on the SmartBoard.

-- Read Mudball by Matt Tavares. Show baseball books. Work on book location skills in Fiction.

-- Book location skills in nonfiction.  Read Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa by Erica Silverman.
