Students in third grade will be introduced to new words and literary genres/texts during story time each week. Each week different activities lend themselves to the incorporation of specific SPI's.  If you have questions concerning anything with the MCE Media Center Curriculum, please do not hesitate to contact me through the school office.

August 7-11 Book location skills in Fiction and Nonfiction Use the SmartBoard to show shelf locations and OPAC to remind students how to locate books using call numbers.
August 14-18 Review book location skills in Fiction and Nonfiction Read an excerpt from Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Clearly
August 21-25   Read an excerpt from Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary
August 28-Sept. 1   Read an excerpt from The Littles (Chapter 1-6) by Peterson

September 11-15 Introduce the Parts of a Book  3.1.spi.3 Discuss main idea, setting, characters, and plot 3.1.spi.4
September 18-22 Read The Firekeeper's Son by Linda Sue Park  Identify the stated main idea. Identify the setting, characters, and plot (3.1.spi.4). Write a brief summary of the main idea of the story (3.1.spi.11).
September 25-29 Review Parts of a Book (3.1.spi.3). Locate books on the shelves using OPAC, Smartboard, and list of books

October 2-6 Reading Is Fundamental  
October 9-13 Review fairy tales.  Review Jules Verne's Adventures of a Rat Family from last year's story time using PowerPoint presentation. Discuss reliable information sources versus fairy tales and storybooks. SPI 3.1.15 and 3.2.14
October 16-20 Dictionaries Unit.Show online dictionaries and locate print dictionaries.  Review how to look up words. Handout:  Looking up Words

October 30 - November 3 Show relationship between dictionaries and encyclopedias. Note the differences.  
November 6-10   Look up concepts from the Social Studies wordlist in Encyclopedias.
November 13-17 Find reference material from the Tennessee Electronic Library that pertains to the Social Studies word list  
November 20-24 Thanksgiving story and word puzzle.

November 27-December 1 -- Read My name is Yoon by Helen Recorvits. John Henry by Julius Lester
Discuss the similarities and differences of the two books.

December 4-8 --  Reading is Fundamental  Each student will choose one book to keep.  Please click on the link to read more about the RIF program.

December 11-15 -- Write a story about a person, real or fictional. Describe unusual features about the person or situations that your character encounters.

January 2-5 --Welcome Back to School.  Read!

January 8-12 --  Introduce "Reliable Sources of Information."  Show Kids Infobits on TEL website.  Discuss copyright laws and plagarism.

January 15-19 -- Discuss "Books and Newspapers" as reliable sources of information.

January 22-26 -- Discuss "Magazines and Websites" as reliable sources of information.

February 2007  Black History Month

Jan 29-February 2 -- Using an Encyclopedia/Look up an assigned topic/Write down 5 facts.

February 5-9 -- Read My Red Balloon.  Discuss the impact of a parent or loved one being away because of active duty.

February 12-17 -- Read Show Way by Jacqueline Woods.  Show students different types of maps using the atlases. Excellent website by Woodson. http://www.jacquelinewoodson.com

February 19-23 -- Map awareness.  Look at atlases, globes and maps.

February 26-March 2 -- Reading Is Fundamental and Dr. Seuss

March 5-9-- Read Lost by David McPhail. Look at different types of maps online and print.  Using the information about legends, maps and atlases, students will draw a map showing how to get from the school to their house.

March 12-16 --  Maps and globes.  Using the desk map provided, answer questions on the SmartBoard.

March 19-23 -- Read Mudball by Matt Tavares. Show baseball books. Work on book location skills in Fiction.

March 26-March 30 --  Book location skills in nonfiction.  Read Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa by Erica Silverman.

April 2-6 --  Read  "Paul Revere's Ride," in  Once Upon a Poem:  Favorite Poems that tell Stories.

April 9-13 -- How to use a Telephone Directory.  SmartBoard activity.
