Mountain City Elementary Library Media Center

Questions and Answers

When can my child check out a book?

The students at Mountain City Elementary can check out books before school begins and after school is out for the day.  I am in the media center around 7:45 AM and I leave around 3:20 PM.  I welcome students and teachers to visit any time they need assistance or materials during the school day.  Teachers determine when students are allowed to visit during class times.  Each class has a regular scheduled visit to the library each week.

How do I know when a book is due back to the Library Media Center?

Books are due a week from the checkout date.  Most students check out books on their "library day".  You can find the schedule by clicking here.

When is a fine incurred?

Book fines are incurred when I have determined that the book is lost and cannot be recovered or the book is damaged.  I establish a fine in the database system about two weeks from the original check out date.  I send notices home if the book is not returned in a timely manner.  Payments can be made in the Media Center or you may send the money and the notice with your child to school.

Oh no, my kid tore a page. Now what?

Don't panic.  Don't use scotch tape.  Just send the book back to the library with a note attached.  Most of the time, the page can be repaired with book tape.  I promise to talk with the student about being careful with pages and show them how I repair the books.

It's a bit worse than a torn page.  Will my child be in big trouble?

If the book is damaged beyond repair, a fine will be established.  I'll send a fine notice home with the student.  Students are not allowed to check out books until the fee is paid.  Parents will be called if the fine is not paid in timely manner just to make sure that you are aware of the book fine.

Suggestions:

Have a safe place for your child to keep library books out of the reach of smaller children and pets.

When the child finishes reading the book, return it and check out another one.

If you notice that your child hasn't brought a book home, ask them about it.

Call me or send a note or an email if you have further questions about the Library Media Center.
