The sixth grade classes will continue to develop book location skills with an emphasis on the Dewey Decimal System during checkout times every time they visit the library.  Students are expected to use the OPAC in order to find a specific title.

August 2006

August 7-11 -- Review book location skills in Fiction and Nonfiction. Discuss book care. Check out books.  Computer Lab Assignment 1:  Review finger positions and home keys.

August 14-18-- Review book location skills in Fiction and Nonfiction.  Review Dewey Decimal System. Computer Lab Assignment 2: Practice finger positions and home keys.

 

August 21-25-- Review book location skills in Fiction and Nonfiction. Computer Lab Assignment 3:  Introduce the Tennessee Electronic Library.

 

August 28-Sept. 1-- Review book location skills in Fiction and Nonfiction. Computer Lab Assignment 4:  Search TEL's Junior Edition K12 for "stone age" using advanced search.  Answer questions provided by Ms. Compton. [6.1.09]

September 4-8 -- Review Reference Sources:  Atlas/Almanacs/ Encyclopedias/Dictionaries.  Computer Lab Assignment 5: Practice keyboarding for 10-15 minutes.  Work on questions provided by Ms. Compton using TEL.   

 

September 11-15 -- Review Reference Sources:  Almanacs [6.1.09]   Computer Lab Assignment 6: Finish up questions and look up one other subject provided by Ms. Compton.

 

September 18-22 -- Review Reference Sources: Encyclopedias  Computer Lab Assignment 7: Begin a project assigned by your teacher.

 

September 25-29-- Review Reference Sources: Dictionaries.  Computer Lab Assignment 8:  Work on project.

November  6-10 -- Review The BIG 6 Research Skills. 

The Big 6 will be our focus of study for the next few weeks.  "Step #1:  Task Definition,"  "Step #2: Information Seeking Strategies," and "Step #3:  Location and Access"

January 8-12 --  Discuss Newbery Medal books.  

January 15-19 -- Book Talks from students about Newbery Medal books.

January 22-26 -- Finish up with Newbery Book Talks. Go over the genre of mystery books using the Powerpoint.  Challenge students to read a mystery book this week.

February 19-23 -- Read Don't hold me back: My life and art by Winfred Rembert. Show website.  Talk about the book and the life Mr. Rembert had growing up in Georgia.
