In Literacy classes, the
students focus on the five essential elements of reading: phonemic
awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.
Kindergarten students
concentrate on learning the letters of the alphabet, letter
sounds, "popcorn" vocabulary words, and fine motor skills activities to
prepare for eye-hand coordination and writing skills. They also
participate in activities which help them learn to focus, pay attention
to details and follow directions.
Students in first through
third grades concentrate on studying vocabulary words from their weekly
vocabulary lists. They also review and learn word attack skills to help
them identify new and bigger words as their reading skills grow. They
will also have plenty of writing activities to help their composition
skills.
Students in kindergarten
through third grade listen to stories read aloud to model fluency and to
encourage a love for reading.
