The purpose of the Youth Power Club is to help
students learn to be responsible for their own actions. It encourages members to select
friends carefully and not yield to peer pressure, be able to say no, and to make wise
decisions. The club meets once each month to discuss current issues and listen to guest
speakers. This year a nurse practitioner spoke to the group on the use of both legal
and illegal drugs. |
A worker for the Northwest Correctional Center discussed what
it was like to be in prison. He also helped the students understand how joining a gang
could lead to crimes that could end in a prison sentence. Miss Teen Tennessee spoke about
the Character Counts Program with the group.
If you are interested in joining this club the sixth grade
group meets the first Thursday of each month. This meeting is followed by a field trip on
Friday. The second Thursday of each month the fifth grade group meets. They have a field
trip on the Friday after their meeting. Sometimes trips for the fifth and sixth grades are
combined. Field trips are optional, however, students are encouraged to go.
