In this lesson you will learn how to correctly use the words lie and lay, sit and set.

Rules

The word sit means “to rest".

I sit on the chair. OR
I sat on the chair.

Set means “to place, adjust, or arrange something”.


I set my gun down.

Lie means to move into a horizontal position to rest.

You can lie on a rug, but you cannot lie a rug.

Lay means to put (something) in a flat or horizontal position, usually carefully or for a particular purpose.

Mama will lay the bowl on the table.
