| Old Yeller
Written by Fred Gipson Old Yeller takes place in a small town in central Texas in the late 1860's. It is the story of a 14 year old boy named Travis Coates who must take care of his mama and little brother Arliss while his papa takes the cattle to market. An old yeller dog wanders onto the farm and steals the family's meat. Travis's hate for the old dog soon turns to love when the dog rescues Arliss from an angry mother bear. After this Travis and the dog which he names Old Yeller are inseparable. Old Yeller helps Travis with all the routine chores such as chasing off raccoons from the corn field, branding the pigs, and even with milking the cow. Old Yeller becomes essential to the Coates family, saving their lives time and again. ~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^ Reading Level 5.8 AR Points 6.0 ~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^ Awards 1959 Young Reader's Choice Award 1957 Newbery Honor Book
