Watauga Lake Once the dam was completed a lake formed behind the dam. The lake is 19 miles long with 106 miles of shoreline. Both Roan Creek and Watauga River run into the lake. The lake borders the Cherokee National Forest at the southwestern end of Johnson County. At 1960 feet above sea level Watauga Lake is the highest lake in the Tennessee Valley Authority system

Watauga Lake has a lot to offer. You may enjoy everything from fishing, boating, swimming, and camping. Fishermen may catch crappie, small-mouth bass, walleye, trout as well as others. Camping is another favorite past time by the lake. Pioneer Landing is equipped to handle everything from tents to RV's. If you don't fish, boat, or camp you may come to just enjoy the lake's beauty. Spread out a blanket and enjoy the cool breezes that come off the lake while you enjoy a picnic.
