Olympics Day 2008

Mountain City Elementary students participate in an "Olympic Day." The day is filled with fun, competition, and featured activities all centered around an Olympic theme. Olympic Day begins with an assembly and a parade of flags. With each class representing a country, students file in behind leaders carrying the United States flag. The parade of flags moves from the school's gym to the loop around the outside of the school, then concludes with a torch relay conducted by sixth grade students who have passed all areas of the National Physical Fitness tests.

Next students compete in six events which include a softball throw, Frisbee throw, running long jump, 75 and 100 yard dashes, cross-country run, and a basketball shooting contest. First, second and third place girl and boy winners of each event in each grade level receive gold, silver, and bronze medals at the awards ceremony the following day. Students learn many facts about the Olympics as they enjoy a beautiful day in the sun and picnic lunch.
