Telling Time - Clocks
How do you add time?
Suppose you are going to beleaving for a vacation on Monday morning at 8:45. You will be away from your hometown for 6 days, 4 hours, and 35 minutes. You want to figure out if you can make it to your friend's birthday party on Friday night at 7:30 P.M. Here is how you go about solving this problem.
Start with the smallest unit. In this case it is the minutes. You leave your house at 8:45. Add 35 minutes to this total. (45 plus 35 equals 80)
8:45 A. M. |
+ 35 minutes
8:80 A. M.
You know there is no such time as 8:80 A. M. Because there is 60
minutes in an hour we will subtract 60 from 80. We will turn this 60 minutes into 1 hour
and add the hour to the 8.
8:80 A. M.
- 60 minutes
8:20 A. M.
+ 1 hour
9:20 A. M.
It is now 9:20 A. M. Next we are going to add the next smallest unit or
in this case hours to this problem.
9:20 A. M.
+ 6 hours
15:20
You know that a clock does not have 15 hours on it. We will subract 12 hours. This turns the A. M. to P. M.
15:20
-12 hours
3:20 P. M.
It is now 3:20 P. M. on Monday. Are you ready for the days?
| Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | Saturday | |
| ---------->1 | ----------->2 | ---------->3 | --------->4 | ---------->5 | ---------->6 |
As you can see from the chart above that it is now Saturday, at 3:20 P.
M. Can you make the party on Friday at 7:30?
Are you ready for some practice?
