Earthworm Pets

Gather earthworms when they come to the surface at night or after a heavy rain. You will need about six if you are going to keep them in a quart-sized jar.

Fill the jar about two-thirds full of dirt. Put a layer of leaves over the dirt. Be sure that the leaves were gathered from the same area as you found the worms.

Place your jar in a cool spot. The jar should not be in direct sunlight. Wrap the jar in black construction paper. Only remove the paper when you wish to observe the worms.

Sprinkle a few drops of water on the soil every few days. The dirt needs to be moist but not wet.

Fed your earthworms vegetable scraps. Always remove the old food before it spoils.
