Buffalo Before Breakfast
Chapter 6 Stampede!
Activity

Activity:  Make a war shield, bow and arrows, or lance like the Native American used when they were hunting bison.

War Shield
Shield of hide were used by the Plains Indians. They used the thick hide from the neck of the bull buffalo. After shrinking and toughening it over a fire, it was trimmed and painted by a warrior. Each warrior painted on his personal magic design, and often believed it was the design that protected him, not the shield.

The war shields above were made by painting  Plains Indian designs onto felt. After drying the felt was then stretched over a large cardboard plate and glued into place. Feathers and beads were used to decorate the shield. A leather strap was placed at the top of the shield for hanging.
