Analogies
An analogy is a comparison of two different things that are alike in some way.
Here are some examples
| wide is to narrow as up is to ____________ | Wide and narrow are antonyms
or opposites, therefore to create this analogy you must find a word that is
the antonym of up. Since down is the opposite of up the analogy may read
like this: wide is to narrow as up is to down |
| green is to go as red is to ____________ | Green means to go on a
stoplight, therefore red means to stop. green is to go as red is to stop |
| clock is to time as thermometer is to ________ | A clock is a tool that tells
time, therefore a thermometer is a tool that records temperature. clock is to time as thermometer is to temperature |
| hand is to glove as foot is to __________ | A glove is worn on the hand.
Something that is worn of the foot is a shoe. hand is to glove as foot is to shoe |
| leaf is to green as apple is to __________ | Leaves are generally green.
The color of apples is usually red. (Note green or yellow would also be
acceptable.) leaf is to green as apple is to red |
You must find the relationship between the first pair of words. Once the relationship is found try to think a a word that has the same relationship with the next word given. Try these.
