Activities -

Ella reads letters written by both Hattie and Olive in Chapter 16.

"Is not my penmanship much improved. I have been practicing my flurrishes. The words may be harder to read and the Writing Mistress dispares of my spelling, but when you stand away from the page, is the result not charming?"

"The whole page was full of blots and cross-outs. Each letter was formed with a wobbly hand, as though the writer didn't know how to hold a pen. Poar Olive!"

Try writing as Hattie and Olive did.

Make a book or scroll.

The scroll may be made to look old by staining the paper with coffee or tea.

Make blueberry ink. This is made by mashing blueberries. Take the juice and add a small amount of vinegar and salt to the juice.

Use a quill to have students write in their scroll.
