The Castle in the Attic

This is a specialized unit. My plans are to have two reading groups: one reading The Castle in the Attic and the other reading Ella Enchanted. On each of the activities pages below you will find one vocabulary word from each book. The castle icon indicates the word is from   Ella Enchanted and the   silver knight icon means the word is from The Castle in the Attic. The activity pages have projects that are appropriate for both books as well as some activities that are book specific. Enjoy!!

The Castle in the Attic
by Elizabeth Winthrop
Ten year old William is given a model of a castle by his nanny, Mrs. Phillips because she is leaving him to return to her home in England. A Silver Knight comes with the castle which William brings to life one day--only to discover that the knight is under a spell, and needs to return to his kingdom to save it from the evil wizard Alastor. With the help of a magic medal, which shrinks living objects, William travels with Sir Simon to help save the kingdom. William finds himself alone in a strange new land and learns a great lesson in courage.

The Battle for the Castle
by Elizabeth Winthrop
Twelve-year-old William uses the magic token to return, through the toy castle in his attic, to the medieval land of Sir Simon, which is now menaced by a skeleton ship bearing a plague of ravenous rats.

Only two lessons are found for this book. This equalizes this unit with the unit on Ella Enchanted. I hope students will become interested in this book and will want to continue reading it on their own.
