Activity - Make a medallion (Janus)

From the Castle in the Attic

"Around his neck, the wizard wore a length of woven ribbon from which dangled three medals or tokens. Once, early on in our acquaintance, when he still trusted me, he pulled that necklace out of his robe and showed it to me. The middle hung a small, flat disk made of lead. At the time, I did not find it particularly interesting. I know better now. Hanging from the ribbon, on either side of the disk, there were two halves of one medal that showed the two faces of Janus. They had hinges, and Alastor told me that they could be fitted together when necessary, but he preferred to use them separately."

""The word January comes from Janus, doesn't it?"  William asked.

"Precisely," Sir Simon said. " I see your education has not been entirely neglected. Janus guards the gates of heaven and looks both ways in time. But the image of Janus on Alastor's necklace had an evil, magical power. One half of the token made things small, and the other restored them to their normal size. The symbols beside Janus' head on each surface were different. The side that made things small showed two staffs, the instruments of punishment. The other side showed two keys.

"I saw him work this magic on a rat. When he pointed the staff side, the rat shrank to the size of a toy. When he used the side with the keys, the rat returned to normal. I'm convinced that most of Alastor's magic lay in that necklace, but I never learned much more about it because after a while he grew secretive around me.

......Alastor pulled the necklace from under his robes, pointed the lead disc at me, and mumbled the word. I reached up and snatched at the necklace which fell off his neck. One half of the Janus medal came into my hand. He lunged at me and tried to get it back, but I curled by fingers around it and held on.

Make medieval banners. The ones below were made of felt and yarn. They hung on coat hangers. If you want to have an authentic design check out the site called Shields, Knights, and Heraldry.

Tapestries

Tapestries were often used as wall hangings and as curtains to help keep out the drafts in the castle. They were made of wool.

One famous tapestry is the Bayeaux Tapestry. Woven into the tapestry was pictures of the Norman conquest of England in 1066. The pictures and words on the tapestry were embroidered with colored wool onto linen. The tapestry is over two hundred feet long and about twenty inches wide.

During the early Middle Ages warriors had a hard time trying to identify who they were fighting in battles and tournaments. The knights of the 1100's decided to solve this problem by creating special designs called Coat of Arms for their shields. The knight picked almost any design he liked including pictures of lions, dragons, eagles, falcons, crowns, diamonds, and other shapes. Coat of Arms were later added to tunics and shoulder guards wore by the knights. They were also embroidered or woven onto banners that were carried by the knights into battle.

Fathers passed down their Coat of Arms to their oldest sons. Younger sons wore a version of their father's Arms. The rule was that the younger son had to change the design somewhat. If the warrior died without a male heir, his daughter was allowed to combine her father's Coat of Arms with her husband's.
