Mummies in the Morning Chapter 1 Activities

This site has information for students, a kid's quiz, printable coloring pages, sections titled "Ask a Mummy", "Build a Pharaoh", and "Meet Sahara the Scarab". There is also a hidden treasure section with great artwork and a book list section for additional study.

Burial Chamber

We enjoyed making a diorama of a burial chamber. First we covered the outside of a shoe box with self adhesive paper.

Then we covered the inside walls of the box with hieroglyphics. We did this by writing a story about the first mummy using the Archibald Font on the computer. After printing this out on gray paper we colored in some of the shapes. We also printed out a stone pattern for the floor of our burial chambers. We covered the entire inside of the box with the hieroglyphs and stone patterns.

Next we made mummies, canopic jars, and other objects using modeling clay. We used white clay and colored them with markers after everything dried.

These are the final projects.

Notice the drawing on the wall of Anubis. He had a human body and the head of a jackal. Anubis was the son of Nephthys. His job was to prepare the bodies of the dead to be received by Osiris.

This burial chamber has a boat to take its master to the next world. Notice the Orisis drawing on the wall.
