Pg. 10 - “It made a good target,” said Queenie, adding in an almost boastful tone, “and I hit the latchstring ten times out of ten.”

Gully - a ditch or channel cut in the earth by running water

Pg. 21 - The pine grove was on a hillside and the trail had partly washed away, becoming a shallow gully that served as a wide path.

Commotion -

Pg. 23 - She stood where she had been when the commotion started, probably seeing no sense in falling for the same trick over and over.

Day 2 - Sowbelly - sidemeat; fatback; streak-o-lean; home grown bacon

Pg. 32 - “Are you crazy?” he said. “You don’t have any sandwich. All you’ve got is a biscuit and sowbelly.”

Dumbfounded - to confound with amazement

Pg. 36 - “Why, of course I have pride,” said Little Mother, sounding a bit dumbfounded.

Day 3 - Vessel - a hollow or concave utensil, such as a container, kettle, or jar

Pg. 49 - “I suppose you’ve done the churning already,” she said, looking inside the big earthenware vessel.

Preposterous - absurd; ridiculous; beyond all reason

Pg. 49 - “Me make biscuits!” said Queenie, as if it were the most preposterous suggestion anyone had ever offered.

Jailbird - (slang) a prisoner or ex-prisoner

Pg. 53 - Hank Franklin said, “It’s a jailbird,” and everybody laughed - all except Queenie.

Hysterically -

Pg. 55 - “Jailbirdies!” said Cravey, laughing hysterically.

Day 4 - Read Chapter 6 Pages 60 -72

Day 5 - Accusation - a charge that a person is guilty of breaking the law

Pg. 73 title of chapter “ACCUSATION”

Day 6 - Malnutrition - insufficient nutrition

Pg. 87 - Queenie was startled. “Malnutrition! Why, that’s the same as starvation!”

Day 7 - Reformatory - a jail like institution for young criminals

Pg. 95 - The next week Queenie said, “I don’t care,” anytime her classmates mentioned the reformatory.

Day 8 - Read Chapter 10 Pages 107 - 118

Day 9 - Archenemy - one who is a chief enemy

Pg. 126 - The entire class seemed stunned at Queenie’s nominating Cravey, her archenemy.
