Prejudice

Weasel feels he is right in killing the Shawnee and hurting Ezra because he disagrees with Weasel's way of thinking. Is Weasel correct in his way of thinking? Why or why not?

Try one of the following activities to help students understand prejudice a little better.

Activities to Help Students Understand Prejudice

  1. Divide the students in the classroom randomly into two groups by one of the following (color of clothing, what they ate for breakfast, etc.). Without giving any justification, tell the first group that they will get candy. Don't respond to the other students cries of unfairness or questioning. Discuss the feelings of discriminating.

  2. Give each student a banana to examine. Then gather the bananas into a basket randomly mixing them. Next have each student find his/her banana. Discuss how the students were able to pick out the bananas they had examined earlier. (size, bruising, coloring, etc.)

Next peel the bananas and place them on a tray. Have the students try to find the same banana again without its peeling. Discuss how the bananas are pretty much the same without the peeling.

Lead a discussion comparing the bananas to people. Discuss how people are pretty much the same on the inside just as the bananas are the same inside.
