Reading Skills - Following Directions - Making Stew
In Weasel Nathan, Molly, Pa, and Ezra eat stew on a regular basis. Trying making a crock pot stew. Divide the class into those who wish to bring in vegetables and those who wish to contribute money. Have the students who wish to bring in vegetables bring in a small can of their favorite vegetable. The following make great stew:
green peas
carrots
potatoes
onions
corn
celery
tomatoes
Have the rest of the students bring in money to buy the meat for the stew. The teacher should be responsible for purchasing the meat.
Recipe
Cut stew meat into 1-inch cubes. You may use beef, pork, lamb, or veal. Brown the meat in a hot skillet. This may be completed the night before and brought in ready for the crock pot.
Place the browned meat into the crock pot. Add the following spices:
Add one ten-ounce can of condensed broth (beef OR chicken). Simmer until the meat is tender. After draining off the excess liquids from the vegetables, add them to the crock pot. Cover and continue simmering until the vegetables are tender. Blend 1/4 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of flour. Stir the flour mixture into the stew. Cook and stir until the stew thickens and is bubbly. Serve hot.
