Day 1

Vocabulary Word of the Day

refinery - An industrial plant for purifying a crude substance, such as petroleum or sugar.

He said the refinery would have to close down within a day, and that meant precious gas and oil could not got to England, or to General Montgomery in the African desert.

Make a map of Phillip's Caribbean home from salt dough.

To make salt dough mix equal 3 cups of plain flour to 1 cup of salt. Add approximately 1 cup of warm water. Mix until you have a dough that is neither crumbly or sticky. To make the dough different colors add food coloring to the water before mixing it with the flour and salt.

Place a map of the Caribbean on a piece of plywood. Cover the different countries and islands with different colors of salt dough. Cover the sea with blue. Let this dry overnight. Label with a fine tipped marker.

Be sure to include these places mentioned in The Cay.

We finished dinner just as it was getting dark, and my father went outside to look at our house. He wanted to see if the blackout curtains were working.

He stood by the lifeboat in the fire's glow, very alert, giving orders to the crew. He was carrying a brief case and a navigation instrument I knew to be a sextant. On the other side of the ship, another lifeboat was being launched.

catchment - A structure, such as a basin or reservoir, used for collecting or draining water.

The rain sounded like bullets hitting on the dried palm frond roof. We ran out into it, shouting and letting the fresh water hit our bodies. It was cool and felt good. Timothy yelled that his catchment was working and had made a large trough that would catch the rain.

Activity - Make a weaving.

Weaving

Timothy insists that Phillip help with the weaving even though he is blind. He does this so Phillip won't give up on life and become completely dependent on Timothy. Weaving a pot holder like the one above may give you a feel for what Phillip went through weaving the mats. Close your eyes and try to guide the strings by feel alone.

Food Activity - Edible Octopus

Cook microwavable Macaroni and Cheese in a small bowl. While the macaroni is heating, lay a hot dog on its side and cut vertically eight times beginning one inch from one end of the hotdog to form the eight legs of the octopus. Place the hotdog on the macaroni  arranging the "legs" across the macaroni and heat. Draw eyes on the "octopus" with mustard. Decorate the dish with with Gold Fish crackers.

Timothy had been cut to ribbons by the wind, which drove the rain and tiny grains of sand before it. It had flayed his back and legs until there were very few places that weren't cut.

Feeling it everywhere under my feet, I knew that the cay was littered with debris. I started cleaning the camp area, or what was left of it. I piled all the palm fronds, frayed by the wind, in one place; sticks of wet driftwood in another.
