According
to the United States Coast Guard Accident Report Database over 8044 boating accidents
occurred in the United States in 1997. Four thousand, five hundred and fifty-five
injuries occurred in these accidents resulting in 819 deaths. Six out of every ten of
these fatalities were caused from the boat capsizing or from people falling overboard.
Fifty-three percent of fatal boating accident victims died from drowning. Approximately 9
out of 10 of those drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket.
In
72% of boating accidents the operator of the boat had received no boating instruction.
