According to the National Fire Prevention Association a fire department responds to a fire in the United States every 18 seconds. Public fire departments attended 1,755,500 fires in the United States during 1998. Five hundred seventeen thousand, five hundred of these fires were in buildings, 381,000 were in vehicles, and 857,000 were on outside properties. Four thousand, thirty-five non-firefighters died in fires in 1998. About 80% of these deaths occurred in homes. A whooping 23,100 civilian fire injuries occurred in 1998. This totals a fire death every 130 minutes and a fire injury every 23 minutes in the United States. The leading cause of death in these fires was by smoke. Many firefighters have also lost their lives in the line of duty. In 1998 112 firefighters died while fighting fires. Eighty-seven thousand, five hundred firefighters were injured while on duty.
