When an Accident Occurs |
When
flood water gets close to your home you should do the following:
Disconnect all electrical
and gas appliances.
Shut off the water main to
keep the contaminated water from getting into your water supply.
Bring outdoor items inside.
Move valuables to the upper
floors.
Stack sandbags away from
your home.
Round up pets.
Use evacuation routes
recommended by the local authorities.
Keep a radio on the news.
Don't drive into water. When
a car stalls in the water, the water's force is given to the car. Two feet of water will
carry away most cars. If you car stalls in water, leave it immediately and move to higher
ground.
Stay out of water that is
above your knees.
After
the local authorities say it is safe to return to your home you must still be very
careful. Follow the rules below:
Have qualified specialist
inspect your home and make repairs before you go inside.
Use a flashlight, no a
lantern or candle.
Check for gas leaks.
Don't turn on electrical
switches.
Don't drink the water until
the health department has declared it safe.
Remove water slowly. If
water is removed all at once the walls of your home may cave in. Remove only about 1/3 of
the water per day.
Throw away food that has
come in contact with flood water.
Take pictures of the damage
for your insurance claims.
