Tornadoes

 

     According to the National Weather Service 781 tornadoes occurred in the United States in the year 2000. Nine of these tornadoes were classified as killer tornadoes resulting in 25 deaths. Over the past three years the United States has averaged 1308 tornadoes each year with an average of 97 of these being killer tornadoes. Since 1997 328 people have died as a result of a tornado.

     In the year 2000 17 fatalities from tornadoes occurred in mobile homes, 4 in permanent homes, 2 in vehicles, and 2 were unknown. Georgia with three had the most killer tornadoes killing 18. Texas came in second with two killer tornadoes that killed three people. More tornadoes hit ground in Tornado Alley than in any other place. This is the area between Texas and the Dakotas.
