Gay Miller was presented with the "Putting Students First" Award on August 11, 2003. This award was presented to Gay by her fellow Johnson County Educators.

South Region: Gay Miller of Mountain City, Tennessee


Miller, a Special Education Resource teacher, integrates technology into every unit she teaches her 4-6th grade special needs students at Mountain City Elementary School in Mountain City, Tennessee. Miller’s class Web page features activities, news, Internet and video projects, and assignments that can be easily accessed by students, faculty, and family.

As Webmaster of Mountain City Elementary’s school Web site for over six years, Miller encourages her students to help update and maintain this nationally recognized site. Web site awards include USA Today’s “Best Bet” award and Education World’s “Cool School of the Week” award. Miller’s other achievements include working with the Mattel Foundation to set up a Family Computer Lab at her school and offering computer classes to parents and teachers.

Doris Curd Honored
Every two years members of the Academic Community are recognized for educational excellence.  A member of the staff at MCE is honored this year.  Congratulations to Ms. Doris Curd.

Tennessee Teachers Hall of Fame


Emily Millsaps,  principal of Mountain City Elementary has given 50 years in the educational profession.  She helped start a pilot kindergarten program in Johnson County; served as the Parent-Teacher Coordinator.  She taught kindergarten and served as the lead kindergarten teacher for the entire county.  She became known as “Ms. Kindergarten” in the county.  She piloted the first K-1 transition class to be taught in the county. She is an active member of the First Baptist Church and has a strong faith in God.  She is involved in many civic organizations including the following:  a member of the Rotary, president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the VFW, president of the Johnson County Historical Society, a director of Johnson County Chamber of Commerce, and on the governing board for the Rural Health Consortium.
